Don't the gas pumps in PA catch the vapors? The pumps in CA and NV have been capturing gas vapors for years (primarily to reduce pollution).

Got to be careful of static. They always say fueling a can in the back of a pickup is dangerous instead of putting it on the ground.

This isn't too far from me. It has been getting a lot of mention on the news.
To the guy that says pump barefoot...how about YOU pump my gas barefoot during the winter in Pennsylvania.

Static electricity in automobiles was a big problem for many years. Still is in some vehicles. I used to shocked all the time. We used to hear warnings about it quite often. Certain seat fabrics worse far worse than others about generating static charges when you slid across the material getting in or out of a vehicle. First thing you touched after generating that charge grounded you creating the spark and a sting to you where you made contact.
I have 5 cats and we have that problem all the time especially during the winter. They love attention; but, they show caution when initially touching me due to the static charges we carry and the resultant spark between us when we first touch.
I worked in computers most of my life and static electricity from walking across carpet and then touching electronic equipment would sometimes short out several computer components. That is one reason for heavy monitoring of humidity in computer rooms. Same same problems with PCs; thus, the need to ground yourself by touching the chassis of the PC before touching any components to prevent frying them with the static charge you may have in you.

Living not too far from where it happened, I can say that people are pretty shook up over this incident. It is a shame a young man had to loose his life over something he must have considered "routine". Please learn from this.

Do you get static from carpeted floor mats? This is really should not happen. I really feel for the family of this man. This could happen to anyone.

People just do not understand how big a vapor cloud there is when fueling and what can set it off. Conservation keeps your money in your pocket.

When I wear a particular pair of shoes I always draw a spark when getting out of the car and touching the metal door to close it. I've taken to pushing on the window to shut the door, thus avoiding the shock. It happens in all weather, not just cool and dry. Don't get in and out of the car while fueling!!

During cold dry weather...I have received a shock or two when getting out of my vehicle and pushing down the door lock. Glad I haven't done that at the gas pump.

ə i said this to the last article about this and will say it again: you will minimize the risk of static electrical discharges if you fuel barefoot and wear clothing made of natural fibers. ə
